Make Oakland County a Great Example of the Benefits of "People Power"

Do county employees (any more than you?) have a say in what medical services that they can actually afford? No,  see NPR.org " Why your health insurer doesn't care about your high medical bills" . This needs to change, first for county employees as an example, then spread to all medical insurance plans. To fix this, the commission needs to require its health insurer to gather randomly selected  groups of say, twelve employees to decide which services should be covered without deductibles because anyone needing treatment would be a fool to delay it. At the other end , some procedures would require more copay from the patient when there is a less costly alternative or reasonable doubt as to the cost/benefit of the treatment. This would bring down healthcare costs by reducing delays in needed early treatment and warn people of accepting the proposed treatment of expensive procedures that are not well proven.

If your property were taken by the police ( including the county sheriff) , which wasn't the proceeds of a crime, would you be okay with waiting  (sometimes it's forever) until you can sue to get it back? I propose that for any asset forfeiture that the county benefits from, that as soon as possible, that at least four out of six "surplus" jurors agree that the seizure is reasonable as stated in the constitution's fourth amendment. I haven't heard about many "civil asset forfeitures" in Oakland county, but as for me and my county , asset seizures will be in accord with the fourth (amendment).

And finally a suggestion about public transit; I live in Berkley and sold my office building in Royal oak five years ago, so I wouldn't be directly affected by the Royal Oak city millage question. Our present county commissioner ( running for reelection) presented a proposal from SMART to add bus routes to improve service in Royal Oak, but the proposal is sure to increase the number of empty buses and leaves out the one simple, cheap solution to make bus riding more practical. On the South Shore Commuter Train, the shelters have doors on in winter, and you can push a button to activate a heat lamp to keep you more comfortable. This would cost a small fraction of the current proposal, and would still be useful if driverless vehicles become the solution to our transit needs. We need more creative thinking in our county government!

Vote for Michael Ryan for county commissioner (district 19) on November 6!
